HISTORY OF THE CLUB

The track at Wombwell was originally known as the Wombwell Dorothy Hyman.

The track was not used very often and following a remark made in 1973 by Mrs Grummett , a resident of Wombwell  “It was a shame Wombwell has a track which was not used” it was felt something needed to be done.

In July 1973 Wombwell athletic club was formed later to be known as Wombwell sporting athletic club. When the club was first formed training was one session a week, but in 1976 this was increased to three sessions a week (Monday Wednesday and Friday evenings). Easter 1981 saw the track renovated by community industry workers and was reopened by councillor John Stanley.

The club competed in open meetings prior to 1976 and gradually increased this to south Yorkshire, cross country, track and field leagues, County and area championships. In 1984 the club entered into the Northern Womens League, and in 1987 into the Girobank Young Athletes League. The clubs road running section developed from running in the South Yorkshire league in 1985 and todays runner league in 1986/87.
